The text

Intermittent heat of the foot Taiyang makes a person have low-back pain and a heavy head; cold rises from the back; cold first, heat after, blazing and parching; when the heat stops, sweat goes out; it is hard to end. Needle the cleft-center and let blood out. Intermittent heat of the foot Shaoyang makes a person's body slack and weary; the cold is not extreme, the heat is not extreme; there is aversion to seeing people; seeing people, the heart startles and startles; much heat, and sweat going out extremely. Needle the foot Shaoyang. Intermittent heat of the foot Yangming makes a person first cold and shivering; the shivering cold is extreme; after a long time, then heat; when the heat goes, sweat goes out; one is glad to see the light of sun and moon and the qi of fire, and only then is at ease. Needle the foot Yangming on the instep. Intermittent heat of the foot Taiyin makes a person without joy, fond of great sighing, without appetite, with much cold and heat and sweat going out. When the illness arrives there is a tendency to vomit; when the vomiting has ended, it declines. Take it then. Intermittent heat of the foot Shaoyin makes a person vomit extremely, with much cold and heat — much heat, little cold. They wish to close doors and windows and dwell within. The illness is hard to end. Intermittent heat of the foot Jueyin makes a person have low-back pain and fullness in the lesser abdomen; urination is not free, like blockage, yet it is not blockage; they urinate often; the mind is fearful, qi insufficient; the belly is gloomy and oppressed. Needle the foot Jueyin. Lung intermittent heat makes a person's heart cold; when the cold is extreme, heat; in the intervals of heat, a tendency to startle, as if seeing something. Needle the hand Taiyin and Yangming. Heart intermittent heat makes a person's heart extremely vexed; they wish to obtain clear water, yet there is much cold, the heat not extreme. Needle the hand Shaoyin. Liver intermittent heat makes a person's color pale and pale, with great sighing; the form is as if of one dying. Needle the foot Jueyin and let blood be seen. Spleen intermittent heat makes a person cold, with pain in the belly; when there is heat, there is sound in the intestines; when the sound has ended, sweat goes out. Needle the foot Taiyin. Kidney intermittent heat makes a person shivering and shivering; low back and spine ache, twisting, and the stool is difficult; the eyes swim and swim; the hands and feet are cold. Needle the foot Taiyang and Shaoyin. Stomach intermittent heat makes a person about to be ill: a tendency to hunger and yet unable to eat; eating, there is propped fullness and a large belly. Needle the foot Yangming and Taiyin, the transverse vessel, and let blood out. When intermittent heat issues and the body is just becoming hot, needle the moving vessel on the instep; open its hollow and let its blood out — at once there is cold. When intermittent heat is just about to be cold, needle the hand Yangming and Taiyin, the foot Yangming and Taiyin. When the pulse of intermittent heat is full, large, and tight, needle the back transport points; use a medium needle, one each beside the five flank transports; according to fat or thin, let the blood out. When the pulse of intermittent heat is small, replete, and tight, moxa the Shaoyin of the shin; needle the well-points of the toes. When the pulse of intermittent heat is full, large, and tight, needle the back transport points; use the five flank transports and the back transports, one each; go until you reach the blood. When the pulse of intermittent heat is slack, large, and vacant, it is fitting to use medicines; it is not fitting to use the needle. In all treatment of intermittent heat, treat before it issues, by about the time of a meal; if you pass this, you have lost the time. In all intermittent heat where the pulse is not seen, needle between the ten fingers and let blood out; when the blood has gone, it must end. First look for places on the body red as small beans, and take them all. The twelve intermittent heats each issue at a different time. Examine the form of the illness to know which vessel's illness it is. Needle before the time of issuing, by about the time of a meal. One needling, and it declines; a second, and you know it; a third, and it ends. If it does not end, needle the two vessels under the tongue and let blood out. If it does not end, needle the abundant channels at the cleft-center and let blood out; also needle those that flank the spine below the nape — it must end. The two vessels under the tongue are the Ridge Spring. In needling intermittent heat, you must first ask where the illness first issued, and needle that first. If the head first ached and was heavy, first needle above the head and between the two brows and two forehead-angles, and let blood out. If the nape and back first ached, needle those first. If the low back and spine first ached, first needle the cleft-center and let blood out. If the arms and hands first ached, first needle the hand Shaoyin and Yangming, between the ten fingers. If the feet and shins first were sore and ached, first needle the foot Yangming, between the ten toes, and let blood out. Wind intermittent heat: when it issues, sweat goes out and there is aversion to wind. Needle the blood of the back transports of the three yang channels. If the shins are sore and the pain is extreme, and pressing cannot be borne, it is named attached-marrow illness. Use a chisel-needle at the Severed Bone and let blood out — it ends at once. If the body has small pain, needle Utmost Yin. At the well-points of all the yin, do not let blood out; needle once every other day. Intermittent heat without thirst, issuing every other day: needle the foot Taiyang. With thirst, issuing every other day: needle the foot Shaoyang. Warm intermittent heat with no sweat going out: use the fifty-nine needles.

The line

Intermittent heat of the foot Taiyang makes a person have low-back pain and a heavy head; cold rises from the back; cold first, heat after, blazing and parching; when the heat stops, sweat goes out; it is hard to end. Needle the cleft-center and let blood out.

The note

To needle intermittent heat by the channels is to send each timed coming-and-going back along the road it started from. The schedule itself is already a kind of explanation.
