The Yellow Emperor said: I wish to hear of overflowing pathogen spreading and soaking — how is it? Qi Bo said: Upright pathogen raids from without inward, and has not yet a fixed lodging; it overflows back into the zang, cannot obtain a settled place, travels with ying and wei, and flies and tosses with hun and po — making a person unable to lie at rest, and apt to dream. When qi overflows in the fu, there is remainder without, insufficiency within. When qi overflows in the zang, there is remainder within, insufficiency without. The Yellow Emperor said: Do remainder and insufficiency have form? Qi Bo said: When yin-qi is abundant, one dreams of fording great waters and is afraid. When yang-qi is abundant, one dreams of a great fire and being burned. When yin and yang are both abundant, one dreams of killing one another. Abundant above, one dreams of flying; abundant below, one dreams of falling. Very hungry, one dreams of taking; very full, one dreams of giving. Liver-qi abundant, one dreams of anger. Lung-qi abundant, one dreams of fear, weeping, flying and tossing. Heart-qi abundant, one dreams of readily laughing, of fear and dread. Spleen-qi abundant, one dreams of song and music, the body heavy and will not lift. Kidney-qi abundant, one dreams the waist and spine come apart and do not belong. All these twelve abundances: when they arrive, drain them, and they end at once. Reversing qi lodging in the heart: one dreams of mound and mountain, smoke and fire. Lodging in the lung: one dreams of flying and tossing, of strange things of metal and iron. Lodging in the liver: one dreams of mountain woods and trees. Lodging in the spleen: one dreams of hills and great marshes, ruined houses, wind and rain. Lodging in the kidney: one dreams of standing at an abyss, sunk and dwelling in water. Lodging in the bladder: one dreams of wandering. Lodging in the stomach: one dreams of food and drink. Lodging in the large intestine: one dreams of fields. Lodging in the small intestine: one dreams of gathered towns and crossing streets. Lodging in the gallbladder: one dreams of quarrel and cutting oneself. Lodging in the yin organ: one dreams of joining within. Lodging in the nape: one dreams of the head being cut off. Lodging in the shin: one dreams of walking and unable to go forward, and of dwelling in a deep cellar or park. Lodging in the thighs and arms: one dreams of rites, bowing and rising. Lodging in the womb-hold: one dreams of leaking stool and urine. All these fifteen insufficiencies: when they arrive, fill them, and they end at once.
