Lingshu · The Five Pathogenic States

The text

When pathogen is in the lung, there is pain in the skin, cold and heat, qi rising and panting, sweat going out, coughing that moves the shoulders and back. Take the outer shu of the chest-center, beside the third joint of the back at the five zang; press quickly with the hand, and when it feels ease, then needle it. Take the center of the empty basin to send it over. When pathogen is in the liver, there is pain in both flanks, cold in the center, malign blood within; in walking one is apt to have the joints tugged; at times the feet swell. Take moving-between, to draw the flanks down; fill three-li to warm the stomach-center; take the blood vessels to scatter the malign blood; take the green vessel between the ears, to send the tugging away. When pathogen is in the spleen and stomach, there is pain in the flesh. If yang-qi has a remainder and yin-qi is insufficient, there is heat in the center and one is apt to hunger. If yang-qi is insufficient and yin-qi has a remainder, there is cold in the center, the intestines sound, and the abdomen aches. If yin and yang both have a remainder, or both are insufficient, there is both cold and heat. Regulate all of them at three-li. When pathogen is in the kidney, there is pain in the bones, yin impediment. Yin impediment: press and you do not find it; the abdomen swells, the waist aches, the stool is difficult, the shoulders, back, neck, and nape ache; at times there is dizziness. Take gushing-spring and Kunlun; wherever there is blood, take it all. When pathogen is in the heart, there is pain in the heart, a liking for grief, at times dizziness and falling. Look at remainder and insufficiency, and regulate its shu.

The note

The five pathogenic states each have their zang. In the lung: pain in the skin, cold and heat. First see whose house the pathogen is staying in; then see the layer it shows to the outside.
